Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison, original name Chloe Anthony Wofford (1931- ). US writer, whose works concentrate on the experience of Black women in the US. Morrison grew up in the Midwest and studied at Howard University and Cornell University. After several years of teaching, she began a successful career as a fiction editor. Her early novels The Bluest Eye (1970) and Sula (1973) were followed by Song of Solomon (1977), a poetic fantasy that brought her national acclaim. Later works include Tar Baby (1983), the Pulitzer Prize-winning Beloved (1987), and Jazz (1992). She was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1993.
