Xenophon
Xenophon (c. 432-350 BC). Greek soldier and author. In 400 BC he led 10,000 Greek mercenaries, the survivors of an unsuccessful expedition against Persia, through hostile territory to safety by the Black Sea. This adventure is recorded in his Anabasis. Having been exiled from Athens for fighting against the Athenians for Sparta, he served as a mercenary officer until about 394, when he settled at his country estate near Olympia. Here he wrote a history of Greece, to continue the work of Thucydides, and Memoirs of Socrates.
