Abelard Peter
Abelard Peter (1079-1142). French philosopher, theologian, and teacher. He was a canon of the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris and fell in love with one of his pupils, Heloise. After the birth of a son they were secretly married, but their affair was eventually discovered. Angry at the damage to Heloise reputation, her relatives hired men to beat Abelard and castrate him. Although Heloise became .a nun and Abelard entered a monastery they continued to write to each other; their correspondence is famous. Both are buried at the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
