“Why can’t Benzene be used as a thermometric liquid even though it is a more sensitive liquid than Mercury? ” Important Questions and Answers for Class 9, Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12

Why can’t Benzene be used as a thermometric liquid even though it is a more sensitive liquid than Mercury?

Benzene can expand about six times more than Mercury for the same rise in temperature but still it is not used in thermometers. The reason being that Benzene has a low boiling point of 80°C  and so it cannot be used to measure high temperatures. On the other hand Mercury has a very high boiling point of 357°C making it suitable for measuring high temperatures.

Also benzene sticks to the glass thermometer while Mercury does not.
