Why is a fuse used in the electric circuits?

The current passing through the domestic wiring depends on the power ratings of the appliance being used. If too many electrical appliances of higher power ratings are used at the same time an extremely large current flows through the wires. This is known as over loading of the circuit. which might heat the wires and cause an electric fire to start. Fuse is a safety device which is put in the circuits to prevent the damages done by overloading or short circuit.
