Sir Henry Bessemer
Sir Henry Bessemer (1813-98), British metallurgist and engineer. His most famous invention was the Bessemer process for making steel (1856), in which air is forced through molten pig iron, oxidizing such impurities as carbon and silicon. The Bessemer process has now been largely replaced by the basic-oxygen process.
