Where are penguins confined?
Confined to the sothern hemisphere, penguins from a separate order of flightless birds comprising six genera; Aptenodytes, Pygoscelis, Eudyptes, Megadyptes, Eudyptula and Spheniscus. They are the most completely marine of all birds and are able to swim underwater as fast as seals. Webbed toes and wings reduced to form strong flippers that cannot be folded, mark their adaptation to their environment.
Ashore they are, of course, bipedal, with an awkward gait. Their diet is mixed, consisting mainly of fish, crustaceans and small squids. They are a gregarious and monogamous order, nesting in large colonies. The male takes an active part in rearing the young.
